Amerigroup Foundation Presents ‘Champion for Children’ Award to Virginia Sen. Janet Howell

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (Monday, November 26, 2012) – The Amerigroup Foundation has recognized Virginia Sen. Janet Howell as a “Champion for Children” for her efforts on behalf of children with autism and has contributed $1,000 in her honor to the Virginia Autism Project.

Representing Northern Virginia since 1992, Sen. Howell has advocated for children and families for much of her career and was one of the driving forces behind legislation that requires insurance companies to provide coverage to children with autism.

“Sen. Howell has been an effective advocate for Virginia’s children for 20 years,” said John Littel, chair of the Amerigroup Foundation. “We are proud to recognize her pioneering work on behalf of children with autism.”

Sen. Howell was named National Child Advocate of the Year by the American Academy of Pediatrics and has received numerous awards for her legislative work.

“I am honored to be named a ‘Champion for Children’ by the Amerigroup Foundation,” said Sen. Howell. “The Virginia Autism Project, which I have designated to receive the monetary award, is dedicated to ensuring that Virginia's children receive early and effective treatment for autism spectrum disorder. They understand that early intervention leads to dramatically enhanced futures for children diagnosed with autism.”

“Senator Janet Howell never gave up on children in Virginia with a diagnosis of autism,” said Lynn Miller, Virginia Autism Project board member. “She introduced autism insurance reform legislation and tirelessly worked to get it signed into law. Her tenacity and strength ensured that children with autism in Virginia would be able to access insurance coverage for treatment and therapy.”

The award is a part of a national program by the Amerigroup Foundation to recognize outstanding public advocacy efforts by government and community leaders to improve the health and well-being of children across the country.
