Amerigroup Foundation Helps Improve Access to Health Care in Maryland

Foundation Grants Primary Care Coalition of Montgomery County $30,000

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (Tuesday, November 27, 2012) – The Amerigroup Foundation announced its support of increasing access and quality of health care to the underserved, low-income population with a $30,000 grant to the Primary Care Coalition (PCC) of Montgomery County, Md.

The PCC will use the funds to provide technical assistance to 12 independent, nonprofit, safety-net clinics focusing on:

  • Improving the quality, efficiency and access of care
  • Enhancing the overall patient experience
  • Developing internal capacity and infrastructure to meet industry measures and standards

With PCC assistance, the clinics’ service capacity has grown from 6,000 patients in 2006 to 27,814 in fiscal year 2012.

“The spirit of the PCC aligns with our mission at Amerigroup — to provide health care solutions to those who need it the most,” said Vincent Ancona, Amerigroup Maryland chief executive officer. “The Foundation’s gift provides support to the PCC in assisting clinics to improve patient access and quality of care for Montgomery County residents.”

PCC technical assistance focuses on three areas: implementations and meaningful use of an Electronic Medical Record; development of patient-centered medical home infrastructure and culture; and provider preparedness in working with health plans for the clinics which do not currently participate with any insurance payer.

“The Primary Care Coalition couldn’t be more appreciative of Amerigroup and its Foundation, sharing both knowledge and funding to help improve the capacity and quality of the safety-net health system serving vulnerable populations in Montgomery County, Md.,” said Steve Galen, PCC of Montgomery County chief executive officer.

The grant will be distributed over a two-year period, $15,000 per year, to provide technical assistance to the safety-net physician practices.

    About the Amerigroup Foundation

The Amerigroup Foundation is the philanthropic arm of Amerigroup Corporation (NYSE: AGP), a multistate managed health care company based in Virginia Beach, Va. The Foundation works to create healthy communities by fostering access to health care, encouraging safe and healthy children and families, and promoting community improvement and healthy neighborhoods.

    About the PCC

The PCC is deeply connected to the continuum of care for low-income uninsured, ethnically diverse residents of Montgomery County who frequently lead medically and socially complex lives. Sixty percent of the adults served by Montgomery Cares report incomes less than 100 percent of the Federal Poverty Level (FPL), and 93 percent of the families of Care for Kids children report incomes below 185 percent of the FPL. Without access to primary care health services, these people live sicker lives, die sooner, and receive costly medical care through hospital emergency departments.
