Amerigroup Georgia Encourages Safe Travel this Holiday Season

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2013) – Amerigroup Georgia has announced that the Amerigroup Foundation has contributed nearly $40,000 toward safe transportation education for children and families over the past two years.

According to the Georgia Governor’s Office of Consumer Protection, automobile accidents are the leading cause of death and injuries for children ages 1-12.

“The improper use of car seats and lack of education are major contributors to the deaths of young children,” said Fran Gary, Amerigroup Georgia president. “Partnering with organizations such as Atlanta Fire Rescue and Safe Kids Gwinnett allows us to significantly increase the breadth of our education efforts.”

Four out of every 10 children under six who die or are seriously injured in auto accidents were unrestrained or improperly restrained. When used correctly, car seats are 71% effective in preventing injury among infants and 54% effective with children ages 1-4.

“This generous grant will allow Atlanta Fire Rescue to continue funding its popular, and very important, child safety seat program,” said Chief Kelvin J. Cochran, Atlanta Fire Rescue. “We thank Amerigroup Georgia and its Foundation for their commitment to Atlanta and dedication to our most important resource–our children. It is especially important during this holiday season when people are driving more than usual that children are safely restrained in vehicles.”

In 2013, Amerigroup Georgia hosted a series of patient safety events including Safety Paloozas and Bike Rodeos to educate communities across the state about the importance of car seat and bike helmet safety.

“Because of Amerigroup’s support, our coalition will be able to provide education and car seats for families in Gwinnett who otherwise would not get them,” said Tania Diaz, Safe Kids Gwinnett coordinator. “Any time we can provide a car seat or education on car seat safety, we are better able to help a family protect their most precious gift—their child.”
